Lawmakers Oppose Lifetime Benefits for Former VIPs Amid Economic Struggles

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives today strongly opposed the proposal to provide lifelong benefits to former high-ranking officials, arguing that such provisions are unjustified given the country’s weak economic condition.
Speaking during the ‘emergency time’ session, Nepali Congress lawmaker Ram Krishna Yadav stated that it was inappropriate to grant lifelong benefits to former VIPs when Nepal is facing economic challenges. “Reports suggest a draft law is being prepared to provide lifetime allowances, housing, personal vehicles, and staff to former presidents, prime ministers, speakers, and other high-ranking officials. This is unacceptable when ordinary citizens struggle for basic healthcare and employment,” he asserted.
Echoing similar concerns, Devendra Paudel of the CPN (Maoist Centre) criticized the move, emphasizing that instead of allocating resources for former officials, the government should focus on providing relief to the people. Likewise, Prakash Jwala of the CPN (Unified Socialist) argued that such benefits would place an additional financial burden on the state at a time of economic distress.
Additionally, CPN (UML) Chief Whip Mahesh Kumar Bartaula raised concerns over recent storm damage in Makawanpur’s Thaha Municipality, urging the government to provide immediate relief to affected households. He reported that nearly 100 homes across wards 3, 4, and 5 were damaged by hailstorms and called on the Ministry of Home Affairs for urgent intervention.
The opposition to the proposed lifetime benefits highlights growing frustration among lawmakers over government spending priorities amid economic hardships and rising unemployment.
