Monsoon Update: Rainfall Forecast for the Next Few Days
The monsoon season is in full swing across Nepal, bringing much-needed rainfall to various regions, including the Kathmandu Valley. The current precipitation is attributed to the partial effect of the monsoon wind and the monsoon low-pressure trough, which is situated south of its typical position.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has predicted that the country will continue to experience rainfall for the next two to three days in most places. According to Meteorologist Binu Maharjan, light rainfall has already been recorded in several provinces, including Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpashim, in the last hour. However, the meteorologist warns of the possibility of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki Province today.
As night falls, there are further chances of heavy rainfall coupled with thunderstorms and lightning in select areas of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Lumbini Province. Residents in these regions are advised to remain cautious during these weather conditions.
The monsoon officially entered Nepal on June 14 and gradually spread across the country over the following two weeks. So far, from June 1 to July 21, the country has received 536.2 mm of rainfall, which accounts for approximately 37 percent of the estimated monsoon rainfall. The average monsoon rainfall for Nepal is 1,462 mm, as reported by the Department.
The ongoing monsoon is crucial for agriculture, water resources, and overall environmental balance in the country. While the rainfall is largely beneficial, authorities and residents should remain vigilant, especially in areas prone to flooding or landslides, to ensure safety and mitigate any potential risks associated with heavy downpours.
