NASA and ISRO to Launch Advanced Earth-Observing Satellite in March 2025
NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have announced plans to launch the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite in March 2025. The launch will take place at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on India’s southeastern coast.
The NISAR satellite is designed to scan nearly all of Earth’s land and ice surfaces twice every 12 days. It will provide detailed measurements of changes in the planet’s ecosystems, land and sea ice, and solid Earth.
According to NASA, the satellite’s observations will benefit global research efforts by offering critical insights into surface changes such as ice sheet dynamics, glacier movements, and sea ice variations. Additionally, NISAR will monitor Earth’s forests and wetlands and detect crustal movements associated with earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic activity.
The collaboration between NASA and ISRO underscores the commitment of the United States and India to advancing scientific understanding of Earth’s evolving environment.
