Nepal Faces Disappointing Defeat Against Namibia
In a challenging start to their ICC CWC League 2 campaign, Nepal’s national cricket team faced a setback as they suffered a defeat against Namibia in the opening match of the 2023-2027 series. Namibia clinched a hard-fought four-wicket victory at the TU Cricket Ground, marking the end of Nepal’s remarkable 15-match winning streak at the venue.
Chasing a modest target of 133 runs set by Nepal, Namibia showcased resilience and composure, completing the chase in 33.1 overs with six wickets in hand. Despite a brief period of tension induced by Nepal’s quick wickets, Namibia’s Nicol Loftie-Eaton’s crucial knock of 31 runs secured the win for his team, with JJ Smith contributing to the victory with a decisive six. Jan Frylinck and Michael van Lingen’s contributions of 34 and 23 runs, respectively, added to Namibia’s successful chase.
Nepal’s batting innings, however, failed to meet expectations as they were bowled out for a mere 132 runs in 41.1 overs after being put in to bat first. Kushal Bhurtel’s early dismissal set the tone for a challenging innings, with Anil Sah, Aasif Sheikh, and Rohit Paudel departing cheaply. Bhim Sharki’s resilient 44 runs and Gulshan Jha’s 21 runs offered some resistance, but Namibian skipper Gerhard Erasmus proved to be the main architect of Nepal’s downfall, claiming a fifer with figures of 5 wickets for 28 runs. Pacers Ruben Trumpelmann and Jack Brassell also made significant contributions, each picking up two wickets.
With this defeat, Nepal faces the task of regrouping and strategizing ahead of their upcoming fixtures in the ICC CWC League 2, aiming to bounce back stronger from this early setback.
