Nepal Police Expanding Canine Unit for Enhanced Investigation
In response to the growing demand for efficient crime investigation tools, Nepal Police has embarked on a significant procurement endeavor to bolster its canine unit. With plans to acquire 12 additional canines from overseas, the force aims to further strengthen its capabilities in detecting narcotics, explosives, and aiding in search and rescue operations.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Naxal Police Headquarters, involves issuing tenders to source highly trained dogs from international markets. According to a police official closely involved with the procurement process, these new additions are anticipated to join the force within the next two months.
Nepal Police currently boasts a canine unit comprising over 80 skilled dogs, proficient in various specialized tasks ranging from tracking to patrolling. However, with retirements of some of these canines, the need for replenishment becomes imperative.
Previous acquisitions have seen dogs predominantly sourced from Europe, Thailand, America, and India, with popular breeds like German Shepherds and Belgian Shepherds reigning supreme. Each canine comes with a significant price tag of up to Rs 500,000, with an estimated expenditure of approximately Rs 2.9 million for the forthcoming procurement of a dozen dogs.
The breeds under consideration for acquisition include German Shepherds, Labradors, and Golden Retrievers, chosen for their exceptional capabilities in crime detection and search operations.
To ensure optimal performance and adherence to commands, every dog is assigned a dedicated police constable trained in handling canine partners. From the age of six months, these dogs undergo rigorous training to develop obedience and hone their detection skills.
A typical day for these diligent four-legged officers includes morning bathroom breaks, physical exercises, training sessions, and rest periods, interspersed with meals and relaxation. Additionally, the canines receive specialized care such as daily massage sessions to maintain their physical well-being.
With the expansion of its canine unit, Nepal Police aims to elevate its investigative prowess and reinforce its commitment to combating crime effectively.
