Nepali Leaders Express Condolences Over Devastating Earthquake in China
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, along with other prominent Nepali leaders, expressed deep sorrow over the devastating earthquake that struck the Tibet Autonomous Region of China on Tuesday morning, leaving at least 120 people dead and 188 injured.
Taking to social media, Prime Minister Oli extended his heartfelt condolences to Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Chinese people, and the bereaved families affected by the tragedy.
“Nepal stands firmly with its neighboring country in this difficult time. Our condolences and prayers will be with you,” PM Oli wrote, underlining Nepal’s solidarity with China during this challenging period.
Former Prime Minister and Chairperson of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also conveyed his condolences through social media. He expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and destruction caused by the 7.0-magnitude earthquake.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to Chinese President Xi Jinping, the people of China, and the bereaved families of those losing their lives to the quake,” Dahal stated, wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.
Former President Bidhya Devi Bhandari also joined in expressing grief over the tragedy. In a message on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), she conveyed her condolences to the Chinese government and citizens.
“At this moment of profound grief, Nepal and Nepali people stand firmly by the Chinese people. I am confident that the Chinese government will succeed in promptly carrying out rescue efforts and restoring normalcy,” Bhandari wrote.
The earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, struck at 6:50 am on Tuesday with its epicenter in Tibet, according to Chinese state media. The tremors were felt across eastern Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley.
Chinese authorities have reported extensive damage, with over 120 fatalities and 188 injuries confirmed so far. Rescue operations are underway as the Chinese government works to address the immediate needs of the affected regions.
Nepal, having faced its own devastating earthquakes in the past, has reiterated its support for China during this difficult time, highlighting the deep ties and mutual cooperation between the two neighbors.
