Philippines Won’t Compromise an Inch of Maritime Territory, Marcos Affirms

In a resolute address to the Australian Parliament, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized his nation’s unwavering commitment to defending its sovereignty amid escalating tensions in the South China Sea. President Marcos, on a two-day state visit to Canberra, underscored the imperative of safeguarding the South China Sea against violations of international law, particularly amidst heightened Chinese assertiveness.

During a special joint sitting of the Australian Parliament, President Marcos declared the South China Sea as a “critical global artery” essential for regional and global peace. He reiterated his steadfast stance against any encroachment on Philippine territory by foreign powers, without explicitly naming China, according to transcripts from his office in Manila.

President Marcos emphasized the Philippines’ determination to uphold its sovereignty, stating, “I will not allow any attempt by any foreign power to take even one square inch of our sovereign territory.” He affirmed that despite formidable challenges, the Philippines remains resolute in its defense.

Highlighting the significance of international support, President Marcos called for reinforcement of bilateral ties between the Philippines and Australia to maintain the peace secured during World War II and protect the rules-based international order. He acknowledged Australia’s consistent support for the lawful exercise of Philippine rights under international law.

Before departing for Australia, President Marcos shared reports from the Philippine Coast Guard regarding the presence of Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy ships near Scarborough Shoal, a contested area under Chinese control since 2012. President Marcos’s administration has been vocal about challenging Beijing’s claims in the South China Sea, in contrast to his predecessor’s policy of appeasement.

President Marcos has actively sought to reaffirm security ties with traditional allies such as the United States and Australia since assuming office in 2022. During his visit, new agreements were signed between the Philippines and Australia on various maritime security and environmental protection initiatives.

President Marcos is set to participate in a special summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Melbourne next week, further underscoring regional cooperation in addressing maritime security challenges.

The address to the Australian Parliament reflects President Marcos’s proactive approach to defending Philippine sovereignty and navigating complex geopolitical dynamics in the South China Sea region.
