Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ is set to take a vote of confidence from the House of Representatives (HoR) today, in accordance with Article 100 (2) of the Constitution.
This constitutional provision requires the Prime Minister to seek a vote of confidence if the political party he represents splits or if a coalition partner withdraws its support. PM Dahal’s move comes in response to the Janata Samajwadi Party, led by former Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Upendra Yadav, exiting the government.
To retain his position, the Prime Minister must secure a majority of the votes from all members of the House of Representatives. Dahal will present his proposal during today’s meeting, as stipulated by Rule 155 of the HoR Regulations 2079 BS. The Speaker will then put the proposal to a vote, with members indicating their decision through signed division of votes.
Shekhar Adhikari, the Speaker’s press advisor, announced that a Business Advisory Committee meeting has been scheduled for 10:00 am today to discuss the vote of confidence.
The fourth session of the federal parliament commenced on May 10. Additionally, the government’s annual policies and programs for the upcoming fiscal year 2081/82 BS were presented in a joint sitting of Parliament on May 28.
