Prachanda-Oli Secret Talks: Political Buzz

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and opposition leader KP Sharma Oli have reportedly held three clandestine meetings in the last three weeks, stirring political intrigue and speculation.

The first meeting, lasting two hours, allegedly occurred in the last week of Magh at the residence of former NRN president Upendra Mahato in Baluwatar. The second meeting took place ahead of the UML central committee meeting, as per insider sources.

Similarly, the third meeting transpired just three days ago at an undisclosed location in Kathmandu, all shrouded in secrecy, according to the sources.

Sources close to the Maoists hinted at the discussions revolving around the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), suggesting a covert dialogue between Prachanda and Oli.

There’s a growing indication that Prachanda is gravitating towards the UML, particularly with the prospect of the Congress party refraining from forming alliances in the upcoming elections. This move is perceived as critical for the Maoists, who previously secured only 32 seats in the 2079 elections.

In response to Prachanda’s overtures, Oli has adopted a milder stance, notably refraining from strong criticisms and negative remarks, aside from the issue of retaining a disputed minister.

While Prachanda had previously discussed supporting the UML in the National Assembly with coalition parties, recent developments suggest a deepening engagement between him and Oli, including a covert meeting during the National Assembly Speaker election, though not independently confirmed by party leaders.

The meetings were reportedly facilitated by UML Secretary Raghuveer Mahaseth and Maoist Deputy Secretary General Barshman Pun, although they did not directly participate.

Amidst discussions within the Congress regarding the 2084 elections during the mahasamiti meeting, suspicions arose regarding the National Assembly Speaker chairperson, given Prachanda’s increasing proximity to Oli.

Formal meetings between the two leaders have occurred multiple times, with sources claiming collaborative efforts between UML and Maoist leaders to form a government together facilitated their interactions.
