Preparations Underway for 10th National Games in Karnali Amid Concerns of Possible Postponement
Preparations are in full swing for the 10th National Games, set to take place in Karnali Province for the first time. The event, seen as a matter of pride for the province, has prompted an accelerated pace of construction of the necessary infrastructure. Officials report that much of the physical infrastructure required for the games is nearly ready, with the tournament scheduled to be held from November 17 to 24.
However, as the event date approaches, there is growing uncertainty about whether the games will take place as planned. With just two and a half months remaining, concerns have arisen that the tournament might be postponed, particularly due to changes in government.
Minister for Sports Tejulal Chaudhary, who visited Surkhet recently to assess preparations, expressed doubts about the readiness of the event. He indicated that the preparations might not be sufficient to hold the national games on schedule.
Despite these concerns, some aspects of the tournament are moving forward. The logo, mascot, and official song for the event have already been unveiled, and the Province Sports Development Council has started the 100-day countdown to the games. However, Chief Minister Yamlal Kandel cautioned that the countdown should only begin once all preparations are complete.
Bishwamitra Sanjyal, member secretary of the Karnali Sports Council, remains confident that the games will proceed as scheduled, citing the near-completion of key infrastructure. “The province stadium, which will serve as the main venue, is 90 percent finished, and the remaining work will be completed by mid-October,” he stated. He added that there is no need to delay the tournament due to infrastructure concerns.
The infrastructure for the 24 scheduled events is nearly complete, and stakeholders have called for the tournament to be held within the stipulated time, emphasizing the importance of sticking to the original schedule.
