Prime Minister Oli taking the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives

The meeting of the House of Representatives has started. In today’s meeting, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has the agenda to take a vote of confidence.

Prime Minister Oli, who also serves as the President of the UML, was appointed on July 14 with the support of the Nepali Congress. As per constitutional requirements, he must secure a vote of confidence from Parliament within 30 days of his appointment.

To maintain his position, Prime Minister Oli needs the support of at least 138 MPs in the 275-member House of Representatives. The CPN-UML has issued a whip, mandating its members to vote in favor of the Prime Minister.

Ahead of the House meeting, the Nepali Congress parliamentary party is convening to finalize their decision on the vote of confidence. Since Oli’s premiership was endorsed by the Nepali Congress, the support of their 88 MPs, combined with the 79 MPs from UML, is sufficient to secure the vote.

Additionally, the Ashok Rai-led Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) and Mahant Thakur-led Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP) are part of the government and are expected to support Prime Minister Oli. The Upendra Yadav-led Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal has also pledged its vote of confidence.

The composition of the House of Representatives is as follows: 88 MPs from Congress, 79 from UML, 32 from the Maoist Center, 21 from the National Independent Party, 14 from the National Democratic Party, 10 from CPN (Unified Socialist), 7 from JSP, 6 from JNP, 5 from JSP Nepal, and 4 from LSP. Additionally, Nemakipa, Janamorcha, and Aam Janata Party each have one representative, alongside two independent MPs.

With the diverse support from multiple parties and independents, Prime Minister Oli is poised to secure the necessary votes to continue leading the government.
