Progress in Post-Quake Reconstruction Brings Hope to Bajhang
Quake survivors in Bajhang district are beginning to find solace as the reconstruction and resettlement efforts gain traction, thanks to governmental and donor agency support. Since the devastating 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck last November, causing significant casualties and widespread damage, Bajhang has been among the hardest-hit areas.
Despite ongoing aftershocks, recent efforts have sparked optimism among residents for the district’s recovery. Temporary shelters, numbering 3,000, have been initiated by the government, UNDP, and the Red Cross, with 1,178 already handed over to beneficiaries.
Notably, NGOs like MPDS Dadheldhura, with support from Save the Children, have contributed 130 additional shelters, alongside establishing temporary learning centers and vital sanitation facilities.
Ishwor Bahadur Khati, a local representative, highlighted the rehabilitation of three badly damaged schools in Chainpur, emphasizing the importance of restoring educational activities promptly.
Statistics reveal the extent of the disaster, with over 10,000 houses and 275 public offices damaged, and sadly, one fatality reported. However, efforts to provide psychosocial counseling and earthquake awareness campaigns have eased fears among the populace, according to local social leader Bishnu Airi.
