Reconstruction of Historic Degu Taleju Temple in Patan Completed, Interior Work Ongoing

The reconstruction of the Degu Taleju temple, a significant landmark within the Patan Durbar Square, has been successfully completed, restoring the exterior of this UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple, originally dating back to the Malla era, was entirely destroyed during the devastating Gorkha Earthquake in 2015.

Leela Pathak, Chief of the Patan Monuments Conservation and Durbar Supervision Office, confirmed that while the exterior restoration is complete, work on the temple’s interior is ongoing as part of the second phase of reconstruction. The temple, the largest and tallest in Lalitpur, will be officially inaugurated following the completion of the interior work, which will include an atonement worship ceremony.

“The temple has been reconstructed in its original style, preserving its historical and cultural significance,” Pathak stated.

The Government of Japan provided financial assistance amounting to Rs 130 million for the reconstruction efforts. Pathak also mentioned that most of the heritage structures in Lalitpur have been restored, with only a few still undergoing rebuilding.
