Republic Established Because of Girijababu,” Says Deuba

President of Nepali Congress and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba emphasized the pivotal role played by the late party President Girija Prasad Koirala in Nepal’s transition to a republic. Speaking at an event held at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Tuesday, Deuba credited Koirala as the driving force behind Nepal’s republican establishment following the 2007 revolution.

Reflecting on Koirala’s enduring impact on Nepali politics, Deuba underscored that while democracy’s reinstatement was significant, it was Koirala’s leadership that steered Nepal towards becoming a republic. “Without Girijababu, there wouldn’t have been a republic in our country,” Deuba stated emphatically, highlighting Koirala’s unwavering commitment and tenacity in shaping Nepal’s political landscape.

Recalling his personal association with Koirala dating back to his student days, Deuba reminisced, “I first knew him during my student days when he supported me in a university election where I initially lost. It was his backing that led me to become the chairman of the Nepal Student Union. He was tirelessly dedicated to his cause.”
