Resident doctors pursuing their Master’s degree in private medical colleges will now receive stipends, as announced by the government. The decision was jointly made by Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Bidya Bhattarai and Minister for Health and Population Pradip Paudel on Monday.
The ministers also decided to formally direct concerned agencies to implement the provision. Under this decision, resident doctors will receive a stipend of Rs 25,000 during their first year of study, Rs 30,000 in the second year, and Rs 35,000 in the third year. This scheme is set to come into effect from the fiscal year 2081/082.
This long-anticipated decision follows the 15th meeting of the Medical Education Commission, chaired by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on November 24, 2024. The commission had tasked the Health and Education Ministers with resolving the issue of stipends for Master’s-level resident doctors enrolled in private medical colleges.
The move is seen as a significant step toward addressing the financial concerns of resident doctors and ensuring equity in medical education across private and public institutions.
