Shri Krishna Janmastami Celebrated Across Nepal with Devotion and Festivities
Hindus across Nepal are celebrating Shri Krishna Janmastami today, the birthday of Lord Krishna, with deep devotion and a variety of religious programs. According to sacred texts, Lord Shri Krishna was born at midnight on Bhadrakrishna Astami during the Dwapar era, as per the lunar calendar.
Lord Krishna, revered as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is seen as the protector of humanity against evil, injustice, and malevolent forces. He is also celebrated as the proponent of the three spiritual paths: Gyanayog (path of knowledge), Karmayog (path of action), and Bhaktiyog (path of devotion).
Shri Krishna Janmastami is observed with grandeur to honor the deeds of Lord Krishna, who is believed to guide humanity toward knowledge, truth, and immortality. Born to Basudev and Devaki while they were imprisoned by the tyrant Kansha in Mathura, Krishna’s life and teachings have left a lasting impact on the world.
Known as “Gopal” for his service as a cowherd and “Manmohan” for his enchanting flute melodies, Lord Krishna continues to be a beloved figure among devotees.
Temples dedicated to Lord Krishna, including the famous Shri Krishna Temple in Mangal Bazaar, Lalitpur, see throngs of worshippers today. This historic stone temple, built by King Siddhi Narsingh Malla of Patan, stands as a testament to the enduring devotion to Krishna.
Various religious organizations and institutions across Nepal are marking the occasion with colorful processions featuring idols of Lord Krishna and decorative portraits. Devotees, especially women, spend the night in prayer, singing devotional songs, dancing, and lighting oil lamps, making the celebration both spiritually and culturally vibrant.
