Tatopani border point closed

The Tatopani checkpoint, where movement has been affected time and again, has been closed. The border crossing has been closed for a week.

Preparations have been started to resume the two-way cargo transfer, the Chinese Embassy in Nepal informed. According to the District Administration Office, China is reconstructing roads, buildings and other structures in the region, including in Khasa and Nyalam.

On March 29, the governments of Nepal and China had agreed to fully open Tatopani for import and export from May 1.

Following the earthquakes in 2015, the operation of Tatopani checkpoint has been rather sporadic. This in turn has created a major headache for workers, locals and traders who import goods from China.

Most of the business people who import goods from China have been affected due to unreliability of the checkpoint operations. Earlier, citing the threat of COVID-19, Chinese authorities had restricted all types of movement across the border.
