The popular social media platform TikTok has officially registered with Nepal’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, aligning with new regulatory guidelines. TikTok’s registration on Tuesday follows the provision of Section 3 (1) of the Guidelines for Regulation of the Use of Social Media – 2080 BS, which mandates all individuals, companies, or organizations wishing to operate social media platforms in Nepal to register with the ministry.
This step, aimed at strengthening regulatory oversight, was endorsed by the Council of Ministers on October 24. Under Secretary and Ministry Information Officer Mamata Bastola shared that the registration process experienced minor delays due to recent Dashain and Tihar holidays but has now been completed.
Alongside TikTok, other social media applications, including Viber and We Talk, have also registered as required by the ministry. “Other social networks are in the process of being enlisted,” confirmed Under Secretary Bastola, as the ministry continues its initiative to bring all social media operators under its regulatory framework.
This action aligns with Nepal’s broader strategy to ensure accountable and transparent social media operations within the country, and the ministry has called on all unregistered platforms to comply with the guidelines as soon as possible.
