Tourism Triumphs: Nepal’s Industry Booms with Over 50% Revenue Growth in 2023
Nepal’s tourism sector is celebrating a historic rebound in 2023, marking a substantial increase in revenue and tourist arrivals, according to the Nepal Tourism Statistics 2023 released by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation.
In a significant boost to the national economy, tourism revenue soared by 52.35% reaching $548.20 million this year, a substantial rise from the $359.70 million recorded in 2022. This financial success is closely linked to a surge in the number of international visitors, who have increasingly chosen Nepal as their preferred destination.
The report highlights that the number of tourists arriving via air routes jumped by 54.3% to 914,270 in 2023, from 592,631 in the previous year. Additionally, arrivals by land saw an unprecedented rise of 352.4%, with figures reaching 100,612, up from just 22,238 in 2022. Overall, Nepal welcomed a total of 1,014,882 tourists in 2023, marking a 65.05% increase from 614,869 in 2022.
This surge in tourist numbers has been influenced by a varied demographic with India leading the pack, accounting for 31.52% of the total arrivals. They were followed by tourists from the USA (9.88%), China (5.99%), the U.K. (5.20%), and Australia (3.82%), with a notable increase from Bangladesh (3.59%) as well.
Tourists are also staying slightly longer and spending more, with the average length of stay inching up from 13.1 days in 2022 to 13.2 days in 2023. Daily expenditure per tourist also saw a minor increase from $40.5 to $41.
The majority of these visitors cited holidays and pleasure as their primary reason for visiting, with 634,301 arrivals under this category. Other significant segments included 132,949 tourists arriving for pilgrimage and 154,262 for trekking and mountaineering, showcasing Nepal’s diverse appeal.
Further supporting the tourism boom, Nepal’s hospitality infrastructure witnessed growth; the number of star-rated hotels climbed from 173 to 182, while non-star hotels increased from 1,228 to 1,416. Consequently, the available hotel beds rose to 54,370 per night, up from 53,365 the previous year.
The Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation has expressed optimism for the continued growth of tourism in Nepal, viewing it as a vital component of the nation’s economic development strategy. With enhanced promotional efforts and continuous improvements in infrastructure, the future of Nepal’s tourism industry looks brighter than ever.
