In a joint press briefing with Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the significant impact of climate change on Nepal and called on the global community to support the country in addressing climate-related challenges. Guterres, who is visiting the Himalayan region to witness the effects of climate change firsthand, expressed his commitment to understanding the challenges faced by local communities.
Guterres also urged for the unconditional release of all hostages, including Bipin Joshi of Nepal, who are reportedly held by Hamas. He extended his condolences to the families of the ten Nepali students who tragically lost their lives in Israel, emphasizing the global impact of conflicts in the Middle East on nations like Nepal.
During his visit, Guterres commended the productive discussions he had with Prime Minister Dahal, aimed at strengthening the relationship between Nepal and the United Nations. He expressed his gratitude for Nepal’s significant contributions to peacekeeping efforts and multilateralism.
The Secretary-General acknowledged Nepal’s substantial contributions to international peacekeeping missions and highlighted the country’s remarkable progress over the last two decades. Nepal’s transition to a republic, its strides towards peace and sustainable development, and its forthcoming graduation from the list of least developed countries were all recognized as significant milestones.
Guterres expressed his eagerness to visit Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, to promote the message of peace to the world, further emphasizing the importance of peace and cooperation in a rapidly changing global landscape.
