UN Secretary-General Emphasizes Importance of World Social Forum in Kathmandu
The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, highlighted the significance of the World Social Forum (WSF) as a crucial platform for amplifying voices, prioritizing the most vulnerable, instilling hope, and devising innovative solutions for global challenges.
In a message addressed to the participants of WSF 2024, which kicked off in Kathmandu on Thursday, Guterres extended warm greetings and expressed gratitude for coming together in solidarity and cooperation. He underscored the necessity of global solidarity amidst escalating conflicts and geopolitical tensions.
Guterres emphasized the urgency of collective action to tackle the climate crisis, especially for nations disproportionately affected by climate change. Drawing attention to his recent visit to Nepal, he stressed the need for increased support for frontline countries and urged major emitters to intensify efforts to reduce emissions while urging wealthier nations to assist emerging economies in this endeavor.
Furthermore, the UN Secretary-General called for unity within communities, advocating for a renewed social contract grounded in trust, justice, and inclusivity, with a focus on empowering women, youth, and marginalized groups in decision-making processes.
He concluded by reaffirming that a world of peace, dignity, and sustainability is not only achievable but imperative, urging collective efforts towards its realization.
