‘Women’s Unity Key to Strengthening Representation’

In a recent gathering hosted by the Women’s Alliance for Peace, Justice, and Democracy, Deputy Speaker Indira Rana emphasized the crucial role of unity among female parliamentarians. Discussing the draft Integrated Election Act, Rana highlighted the necessity for women to ensure their representation across all state organs, reflecting the latest census data.

Rana proposed that communities with significant female presence should have the right to elect their representatives accordingly. She asserted that the parliament is the ideal platform for advocating women’s agendas and urged female lawmakers to assert their influence effectively.

Echoing Rana’s sentiments, women’s rights activist Sashi Shrestha urged female legislators to collaborate closely in proposing amendments to laws addressing women’s concerns. She stressed the importance of solidarity and rigorous debate in legislative processes.

Similarly, CPN (UML) leader Binda Pandey emphasized proportional representation for marginalized groups, including Dalits and minorities, citing Article 38 of Nepal’s Constitution. Pandey called for adherence to constitutional provisions guaranteeing equal rights without gender discrimination.

Highlighting the need for collective action, Pandey suggested the formation of a Women Coordination Committee comprising all female parliamentarians to advance gender equality effectively.

Further contributing to the discussion, CPN (Unified Socialist) parliamentarian Ram Kumari Jhakri emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive electoral environment that enables all eligible voters, regardless of their location, to participate in elections.

Concluding the event, leaders unanimously stressed the imperative for lawmakers and stakeholders to uphold constitutional provisions safeguarding women’s rights in all legislative endeavors.
