Nepal’s Santoshi Shrestha secured the 79th position in the Women’s Marathon at the Paris Olympics 2024, marking a notable achievement in her first Olympic appearance. Shrestha completed the marathon in two hours, 55 minutes, and six seconds during the race held today in the French capital.
Competing against 92 athletes, Shrestha, who was selected for the Olympics through a wild card, put forth a strong effort in the highly competitive event. The marathon was won by Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands, who claimed the gold medal with a time of two hours, 22 minutes, and 55 seconds.
Ethiopia’s Assefa secured the silver medal, finishing with the same time as Hassan, while Kenya’s Hallen Obiri took the bronze, completing the race in two hours, 23 minutes, and 13 seconds.
With Shrestha’s marathon performance, Nepal’s participation in the Paris Olympics has come to a close. Other athletes representing Nepal, including Santoo Shrestha in table tennis, Susmita Nepal in shooting, Duana Lama and Alexander Shah in swimming, Manita Shrestha Pradhan in judo, and Prince Dahal in badminton, have all been eliminated from their respective competitions.
Shrestha’s participation and finish in the marathon, however, marks a significant milestone for Nepal in the global sporting arena, and her performance has been a source of pride for the nation.
