Lamidanda Airport in Khotang Awaits Resumption of Regular Flights Despite Successful Test Flight
Lamidanda Airport, the oldest in Khotang district, remains without regular flights despite a successful test flight following its blacktopping on 3 Asar 2076 BS. The test flight, inaugurated by Constituent Assembly member Bishal Bhattarai, marked the completion of blacktopping at a cost of Rs 67.7 million, funded by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).
Bhattarai stated that discussions were ongoing with CAAN to start regular flights at the airport. However, since the test flight, no aircraft has taken off or landed at the airport. The turning pad of the airport, which had been operational since 2028 BS in its raw state, has been blacktopped 28 meters on both sides.
The airport was initially constructed to serve devotees and tourists visiting Halesi, a significant religious and tourist destination in the district, as well as the residents of Okhaldhunga and Solukhumbu districts. Local resources were used to begin the construction in 2026 BS, and the airport became operational two years later in 2028 BS.
Despite the upgraded infrastructure, locals now face significant challenges due to the lack of regular flights. Many are forced to charter helicopters to transport critically ill or injured persons to other areas for treatment. Phatik Kumar Shrestha, Chief of Rawabesi Rural Municipality, criticized the state for reducing flights at the airport, which serves residents of three districts and pilgrims visiting Halesi.
“We have repeatedly requested the concerned bodies to resume regular flights,” Shrestha said, “but no one has shown any interest in reopening the blacktopped airport.” Locals also noted that airport employees and equipment have been relocated to other places since the suspension of flights.
Lawmaker Ram Kumar Rai ‘Pasang’ expressed regret over the situation, stating that efforts are underway to determine the reasons behind the reduction in flights. “It is a matter of regret that flights at Lamidanda Airport have been curtailed. The airport, which has been blacktopped with state funds, has been obstructed for the last six years,” Rai said.
Khotang district is home to three airports, all of which have been blacktopped with CAAN’s investment to provide air services to local residents across the district’s 10 local level governments. Despite these investments, the future of regular flights at Lamidanda Airport remains uncertain.
