UN Secretary General to Meet President Paudel in Baku at COP29

Baku, Azerbaijan — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to pay a courtesy call on Nepalese President Ramchandra Paudel on Wednesday during the ongoing 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Baku.

Earlier in the day, President Paudel will lead a special session titled “Addressing Climate-Induced Loss and Damage in Mountainous Regions” on behalf of Nepal. This session aims to spotlight the severe impacts of climate change on mountainous countries like Nepal, emphasizing the urgency for global action to mitigate these effects. In addition to the session, President Paudel will join an event hosted by Kyrgyzstan to further underscore climate challenges specific to high-altitude nations.

Also representing Nepal at COP29, Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi will participate in high-level meetings. The Nepalese delegation, led by President Paudel, arrived in Azerbaijan on Monday following an invitation from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

This year’s COP29 summit has drawn an extensive assembly of influential climate leaders, with representatives including presidents, vice presidents from over 40 nations, and prime ministers from 35 countries, all gathering to discuss urgent measures and foster global cooperation in climate action.
