Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal takes U-turn, withdraws retirement after meeting PM

In a surprising turn of events, Bangladeshi batsman Tamim Iqbal has reversed his retirement decision just one day after announcing his departure from international cricket.

The abrupt retirement announcement came following Bangladesh’s defeat against Afghanistan in the first ODI of their three-match series, which had significant implications for the team’s preparations for the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup.

During a press conference, an emotional Tamim declared, “This is the end for me. I have given my best. I am retiring from international cricket from this moment.” While the cricketer did not disclose the specific reasons behind his retirement, he mentioned discussing them with his family members and contemplating the decision for some time.

However, the situation took an unexpected twist when Tamim had a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday, prompting a change of heart.

The batsman expressed his admiration for the Prime Minister, stating, “I can reject everyone, but I cannot reject the Prime Minister.”

Accompanied by his wife, former captain Mashrafe Mortaza, and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan, Tamim visited the Prime Minister’s residence for the crucial meeting.
