CIB Launches Inquiry into Gold Smuggling; SP Thapa Appointed Lead Investigator

Kathmandu– The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police has initiated a formal investigation into the 100 kg gold smuggling scandal as of Monday, designating Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjay Singh Thapa as the lead investigator.

In a significant move, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ directed the Revenue Investigation Department (RID) to hand over the responsibility of investigating the case to the CIB last Thursday. Consequently, the CIB was officially entrusted with the task of delving into the intricacies of the smuggling case on the subsequent Sunday.

All 17 individuals who had been detained by security forces in connection with their suspected involvement in the smuggling case were subsequently transferred to the custody of the CIB on the same Sunday.

Nepal Police’s spokesperson, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Kuber Kadayat, shared that the CIB has set SP Thapa at the helm of the investigation process. The Thapa-led team has commenced the investigation by meticulously reviewing case files and adjusting the timelines for cases progressing from district courts to the High Court, stated DIG Kadayat.

The CIB’s investigation will encompass not only the legal aspects but also delve into financial complexities and scrutinize the potential existence of organized and transnational criminal networks, according to DIG Kadayat.

The incident under investigation pertains to the seizure of an estimated 100 kg of smuggled gold concealed within brake shoes. The seizure occurred right in front of the Customs Office at the Tribhuvan International Airport on July 19. Presently, the smuggled gold is in the custody of Nepal Rastra Bank, where experts are working to ascertain its precise quantity.

The initiation of this investigation by the CIB underscores the dedication of Nepal Police to uncover the truth behind this substantial gold smuggling case. The assignment of SP Thapa as the lead investigator highlights the commitment to a thorough and impartial inquiry, as authorities work diligently to uphold the rule of law and preserve the integrity of the nation’s legal system.
