Devastating Kagbeni Flood Inflicts Over Rs 1 Billion in Losses

The catastrophic flood that struck Kagbeni in Mustang on August 13, 2023, has left a trail of devastation, resulting in a staggering loss of over Rs 1 billion. Data compiled by the disaster management committee of Baragung Muktikshetra Rural Municipality highlights the extent of the destruction, encompassing private residences, government and non-governmental structures, business establishments, and various other facilities.

The flood wreaked havoc, decimating not only physical structures but also causing significant losses in agricultural sectors. The disaster led to the destruction of crops and fruit farms in the area, profoundly impacting the livelihoods of local communities.

Lokendra Singh Dhami, the chief of the agriculture section at the Rural Municipality, noted that the flood obliterated apple farming across more than 11 ropanis of land. Additionally, approximately 170 apple saplings fell victim to the deluge.

The calamity forced many residents to evacuate their homes, leaving them displaced and grappling with the loss of their possessions and shelter. Those affected are currently seeking refuge in the homes of their relatives or taking shelter within school buildings. Stricken by the aftermath of the flood, these individuals are struggling to secure basic necessities and meals without the aid of relief efforts.

The tragic event underscores the vulnerability of communities to the unpredictable forces of nature and serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and response. As the affected region grapples with the immense losses incurred, efforts to support those affected and aid in their recovery become imperative.
