EC Calls for Political Party Registration Ahead of NA Elections

In a crucial step towards the upcoming National Assembly elections scheduled for January 25, 2024, the Election Commission has called upon political parties to register themselves. According to the commission’s announcement, the registration process is set to take place, and political parties can expect the allocation of election symbols on December 17.

Following the registration and symbol allocation, the list of approved political parties is slated to be published in the Nepal Gazette on December 20, providing transparency and clarity to the public.

The urgency for these preparations is in accordance with the constitutional mandate outlined in Article 86 (3) of the Constitution of Nepal. The term of office for one-third of the National Assembly members is set to expire on March 3, 2024. To comply with legal provisions, elections are mandated to be held 35 days before the positions go vacant, precisely on January 29, 2024, as specified in the National Assembly Member Election Act, 2075.

Notably, the term of office for a total of 20 National Assembly members, comprising 19 elected members and one government-nominated member, is expiring on March 3, 2024. The Election Commission’s proactive measures aim to ensure a smooth and timely electoral process, upholding the democratic principles of the nation.
