The importation of electric vehicles (EVs) has experienced a remarkable surge in the past five months, with the total tally surpassing 4,000 units. This influx encompasses a diverse range of vehicles, including private cars, micros, and public transport, showcasing a growing acceptance of electric mobility in the country.

Breaking down the statistics, a notable portion of the imported EVs includes 1,595 car jeeps with power ratings up to 50 kW, indicating a preference for smaller and more energy-efficient vehicles. The Department of Customs reports that 52 vehicles within the 100 to 200 kW range were brought in, along with 2,028 vehicles falling between 51 to 100 kW, demonstrating a varied mix of electric vehicle options entering the market.

High-powered electric vehicles have also made a significant impact, with 11 private vehicles boasting a capacity above 201 kW successfully imported. This signals a growing interest in powerful electric vehicles among consumers.

In the public transport sector, the importation of electric micro buses and minibuses has contributed to the diversification of sustainable transportation options. A total of 134 micro buses with seating capacities ranging from 11 to 14 seats and 56 minibuses accommodating 15 to 25 seats have been imported, reflecting a commitment to eco-friendly public transportation solutions.

Furthermore, the market has seen an additional 166 vehicles equipped with electric motors, indicating a broader acceptance of electric propulsion systems across different vehicle types.

The collective spending on these imported electric vehicles has reached an impressive 10 billion rupees, with a substantial portion of this expenditure, totaling 600 million rupees, attributed solely to the importation of micro and minibuses. This underscores the growing investment in sustainable public transportation solutions and highlights the increasing role of electric vehicles in shaping the future of mobility in the country.
