Establishing Secularism Was a Mistake: Shashanka Koirala

Former general secretary of the Nepali Congress, Shashanka Koirala, has stated that it was a mistake to establish a secular country.

Koirala made this statement at the closing ceremony of the Mahasamiti Committee meeting in Godawari, Lalitpur, emphasizing that the Congress should advocate for religious freedom.

“Religion is neither objective nor relative. Religion is independent,” Koirala remarked.

In his succinct address, Koirala also referenced his father, BP Koirala, stating, “My mother used to perform puja regularly. My father, BP Koirala, used to say that it is her right; she should do whatever she wants to do.” Shashanka added, “But unfortunately, we made it secular. This is incorrect.”

Koirala emphasized that alliances should not be formed before elections. “The party is not weak; I don’t see the necessity for an alliance,” he asserted.

He further stated that coalitions should be formed after the elections when the government is being established. “It is unfortunate to form an alliance before the election. Alliances should be made after the elections, prior to forming the government,” said Shashanka.
