Final Rites of Constituent Assembly Chairperson Held with State Honors

The final rites of the late Constituent Assembly Chairperson and CPN-UML’s vice-chair, Subash Chandra Nembang, were solemnly performed today at Pashupati Aryaghat with full state honors. The emotional event followed a funeral procession that traversed several significant locations in the capital.

The procession commenced at Nembang’s private residence in Baluwatar and proceeded through notable spots, including Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, Narayangopal Chowk, Dumbarahi, Chabahil, Gaushala, and ultimately concluded at Pashupati Aryaghat.

Subash Chandra Nembang, aged 71, passed away unexpectedly on September 12, succumbing to a heart attack. His demise left a void in the political landscape of Nepal.

Prominent political figures paid their respects to the late leader during the ceremonies. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda honored Nembang by draping the national flag over his body, signifying the nation’s gratitude for his service.

CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli, also in attendance, draped the party flag over Nembang’s body as a symbol of the party’s reverence for his contributions.

Among the dignitaries present, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, RPP Chairman Rajendra Lingden, Rastriya Jan Morcha Chairman Chitra Bahadur KC, and several other leaders gathered at Aryaghat to pay their last respects to Nembang.

Nembang, born on March 11, 1953, had a remarkable political career, serving as the first elected Free Students Union President of Mahendra Ratna Campus in Ilam and as the general secretary of the Nepal Bar Association in 1987.

In February 2023, he was nominated as a presidential candidate for the CPN-UML in Nepal’s presidential election, but he was narrowly defeated by Ram Chandra Paudel of the Nepali Congress.

Nembang’s enduring legacy includes consistently emerging victorious from Ilam-2 in all elections held after the restoration of democracy in 1990. He also held key positions such as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee and chairman of the Constituent Assembly, contributing significantly to Nepal’s political landscape throughout his career. His passing marks the end of an era in Nepalese politics.
