Gandhara: Unveiling a Historical Treasure

In a recent symposium organized by the Embassy of Pakistan in Kathmandu, the profound Buddhist heritage of Pakistan and its historical connections with Nepal took center stage. The event, titled “Gandhara: Unwinding a History Treasure Trove,” featured Dhananjay Regmi, CEO of the Nepal Tourism Board, as the Chief Guest, along with intellectuals, Buddhist monks, scholars, tour operators, and Nepal Tourism Board representatives.

The symposium aimed to shed light on the remarkable historical treasures, including ancient structures and relics of the Gandhara Civilization, located in the plains and valleys of Punjab and KPK Provinces in Pakistan. It sought to encourage history, culture, and archaeology enthusiasts to experience these captivating relics firsthand.

During his speech, Mr. Dhananjay Regmi fondly recalled his visit to Pakistan, emphasizing the depth and warmth of the friendship between Nepal and Pakistan. He praised Pakistan’s dedication to preserving Buddhist heritage.

Various distinguished speakers at the event shared their insights on topics such as “Pilgrimage to Buddhist Cradle – Taxila and Takht-e-Bahi,” “Gandhara’s Intellectual Contribution to Buddhism Worldwide,” “Preserving History – Promoting Harmony,” and “Visiting Gandhara: Viability and Workability.” They commended the Pakistani government’s efforts to safeguard its rich history and promote harmony among diverse beliefs. The discussions also revolved around the practicality of Gandhara Tourism.

Ambassador of Pakistan to Nepal, Abrar H Hashmi, who joined the event virtually, highlighted the historical Buddhist ties between Nepal and Pakistan. He underscored the event’s objective to showcase Gandhara’s vast potential as a destination for tourists, history enthusiasts, devout Buddhists, and archaeology lovers. Moreover, he expressed a commitment to fostering discussions and practical options for developing a Buddhist tourist route between Nepal and Pakistan.
