Guterres arrives in Lumbini

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, on an official visit to Nepal, embarked on a historic journey to Lumbini, the revered birthplace of Buddha. This visit marks a significant moment as the Secretary-General’s last visit to Lumbini took place nearly 15 years ago, emphasizing the enduring global importance of this sacred site.

Secretary-General Guterres arrived in Lumbini after a remarkable journey, having earlier reached the Annapurna Base Camp. His arrival in Lumbini was made possible through a helicopter ride from the Gautam Buddha International Airport in Pokhara. This momentous occasion was graced by the presence of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda and several dignitaries, including Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Sudan Kiranti, among others.

During his visit, Secretary-General Guterres is set to participate in a formal program organized by the Lumbini Development Fund, which will span approximately an hour and a half. His itinerary includes a visit to the sacred Mayadevi Temple, where he will offer prayers through the Shanti Deep and undertake a symbolic walk from Shanti Deep to the Mayadevi Temple, honoring the spiritual significance of this revered place.

A key highlight of this visit is Secretary-General Guterres’ planned address to the press, during which he is expected to deliver a profound message advocating for global peace and unity. Lumbini’s symbolic importance as a beacon of peace and harmony on the international stage further underscores the significance of this address.
