Kuwait Forms New Government Under PM Sheikh Mohammed Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah
Kuwait announced the formation of a new government on Wednesday, marking the country’s first cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah. This move follows the passing of the previous ruler, Sheikh Nawaf, and the subsequent appointment of Emir Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah in December.
Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah wasted no time in assembling his cabinet, appointing key figures to crucial ministerial positions. Among the notable appointments are Emad Mohammed al-Atiqi as the new oil minister, Anwar Ali al-Mudhaf as the finance minister, and Abdullah Ali al-Yahya as the foreign minister.
The prime minister expressed the weight of the responsibility associated with this new phase in Kuwait’s history, acknowledging the challenges and aspirations ahead. He emphasized the need for hard work and genuine accomplishments to meet the guidance of the new Emir, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah.
“This is a heavy responsibility of a new phase of Kuwait’s history which includes challenges and aspirations, and requires further hard work and genuine accomplishment,” stated Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah, as quoted by KUNA.
The new government is expected to focus on implementing reforms in line with the emir’s vision. Emir Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, who assumed power in December, is anticipated to maintain Kuwait’s foreign policies, including support for Gulf Arab unity, Western alliances, and a strong relationship with Riyadh.
However, the challenges are not without hurdles, as Kuwait navigates longstanding tensions between the ruling family and critics within the parliament. The country’s political landscape has been characterized by deadlock and fragmentation, with the parliament holding significant influence. This has historically led to cabinet reshuffles and the dissolution of parliament in efforts to address fiscal and economic reforms. The new government’s ability to navigate these challenges will be closely watched as Kuwait enters a new era under its current leadership.
