NCP Announces Demonstrations in Response to Warrants for Biplav and Party Leaders

In response to the arrest warrants issued by the Kathmandu District Court against its leaders, the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has declared a series of protest programs, denouncing what it perceives as a direct violation of a prior agreement with the government.

The arrest warrants specifically target NCP General Secretary Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav,’ spokesperson Khadga Bahadur Bishwakarma, Politburo member Maila Lama, and other prominent party figures. The warrants stem from a March 2020 case, prompting General Secretary Biplav to assert that this action contradicts a 3-point agreement reached with the government on March 5, 2021.

Biplav emphasized that among the agreed-upon points, a crucial element was the withdrawal of cases against party members and the release of imprisoned comrades when the ban on the party was lifted. He argued that the recent arrest warrants directly contravene this agreement.

Characterizing the court’s move as an aggressive stance against peaceful initiatives to address the nation’s issues, the NCP issued a strong condemnation, urging an end to what it perceives as divisive acts within the judicial system.

To express their dissent, the NCP has announced a three-day protest commencing immediately. The protest schedule includes a torch procession on Tuesday at 5:30 pm, the symbolic burning of the judge’s effigy on December 6, and a nationwide public demonstration on December 7 at 2 pm.

The NCP’s protest aims to draw attention to what it considers an infringement on the agreed-upon terms with the government and to mobilize public support against what they perceive as an unjust legal action targeting their leadership. The developments unfold against the backdrop of heightened political tension in Nepal, with the NCP pushing back against what it sees as unwarranted interference in its affairs.
