Nepali National Fatally Stabbed in Portugal: Tragedy Strikes Amidst Roommate Dispute

In a heartbreaking incident, a 36-year-old Nepali national, Dhan Bahadur Chhetri, met a tragic end in Portugal after being stabbed by his roommate. The incident unfolded in Boavista, Odemira, Portugal, where Chhetri, hailing from Kushma Municipality-13, Parbat, was fatally injured during a confrontation with his 30-year-old room partner, Lokendra Gurung of Putlibazar-12, Parbat.

According to reports, the stabbing occurred last Tuesday night, as Gurung, under the influence of alcohol, attacked Chhetri, resulting in serious injuries. Despite immediate medical attention, Chhetri succumbed to his wounds on Thursday while undergoing treatment at Hospital Do Litoral Alentejano in Santiago, Portugal. The news was confirmed by Umesh Khadka, President of the Non-Resident Nepali Association of Portugal.

The Honorary Consul General in Portugal, Makar Bahadur Hamal, disclosed that both Chhetri and Gurung had arrived in Portugal eight months ago for foreign employment. Both were employed by an agricultural company in Odemira. The authorities revealed that Gurung, who fled the scene after the brutal act, has been apprehended by the police and is currently under investigation.

The Nepali community in Portugal is grappling with shock and sorrow over the untimely demise of Chhetri. Efforts are being made to provide support and assistance to Chhetri’s family during this challenging time.

The incident highlights the potential risks associated with substance abuse and interpersonal conflicts among migrant workers living abroad. The local authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the fatal altercation.
