NHRC Calls for Strengthened Labor Rights on International Labor Day

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government and concerned bodies to ensure the implementation of the government-fixed minimum remuneration for workers. This appeal was made in a press note released today to commemorate the 135th International Labor Day.

The NHRC has highlighted several key issues including the necessity for workers from all sectors to be incorporated into the Social Security Fund and emphasized creating a work environment that is safe and respectful for all. The commission has called for an end to all forms of labor exploitation.

With concerns over the mass migration of Nepali youth seeking employment abroad due to inadequate job opportunities and lack of dignity in domestic work, the NHRC stressed the importance of enforcing national and international laws to strengthen workers’ rights. Reports of delayed wages, labor exploitation, and violations of workers’ rights in the private sector continue to be a significant concern.

Tragically, workplace incidents in Nepal leading to injuries and fatalities persist, necessitating a stronger enforcement of labor rights which include respect for labor, non-discrimination, issuance of appointment letters, prevention of child labor, guarantee of minimum wages, provision of leave and rest, maintaining safe work environments, offering social security, and upholding rights to unionize and engage in collective bargaining. These rights are backed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, UN Conventions ratified by Nepal, ILO standards, as well as the nation’s constitution and labor laws.

As the world marks May Day, focusing on advocating for safer and healthier workplaces in light of the climate crisis, Nepal observes this day under the theme “decent work, respect for labor: our campaign.” The NHRC’s call to action reflects a pressing need to address these longstanding issues to improve the labor environment across the nation.
