Oli Warns Against Left-Wing Unity, Labels it a ‘Populist Approach’

In a recent address to the party’s central committee members, CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli has strongly discouraged the advocacy for left-wing unity, dismissing it as a “populist approach.” Oli emphasized the historical context, citing two previous instances of party splits during unification efforts in 2007BS.

“The notion that left-wing power will not diminish is a populist perspective. I implore my colleagues to resist it,” Oli stated firmly. Drawing on his experience, he recounted that even at the beginning of his political career, calls for left-wing unity were prevalent. However, he highlighted the paradox that efforts towards unity often resulted in further divisions within the party.

“Even when I entered politics, party divisions persisted. Back then, the rallying cry was for left-wing unity. However, the more we strive for unity, the more fractures appear. One union begets two separations,” he added, underscoring the challenges and complexities associated with unification efforts.

Oli delved into the party’s 75-year history, pointing out that unity, while a necessity at times, had led to subsequent divisions. He argued that such divisions were essential for effective government formation and policy implementation, asserting that without them, these crucial tasks would have been nearly impossible.

The CPN-UML Chairman contended that internal divisions hinder the movement aligned with left-wing ideologies from effectively serving the interests of the people. He cautioned against the continuous disruptions caused by internal strife and urged party members to prioritize stability over the allure of populist calls for unity.
