Open Border: Key to Strong Nepal-India Relations, Say Speakers

An interaction program organized by the Nepal-India Open Border Dialogue Group, Parsa, underscored the pivotal role of an open border in fostering cordial relations between Nepal and India. Held in Birgunj on Wednesday, the event brought together leaders and experts from both nations.

Chaired by Dr. Rajeev Jha, National Chairman of the Nepal-India Open Border Dialogue Group, the program saw robust discussions on the theme “Open Border – Bridge of Smooth Relations”. Dr. Jha criticized the composition of the EPG report preparation committee, arguing against its suitability in addressing the complexities of the Nepal-India border.

Keshav Jha, representing the National Liberation Revolution, highlighted the nuanced dimensions of bilateral relations, stressing the need for mutual understanding and cooperation.

Addressing concerns, senior journalist Chandra Kishor cautioned against the militarization of the Madhesh region under the pretext of border security. He advocated for legislation that aligns with the aspirations of border-area residents.

Mahesh Agrawal, a social activist from Raxaul, echoed sentiments on the necessity of open borders for facilitating seamless interaction between the peoples of both countries. State member Shyam Patel echoed these sentiments, rejecting the notion of erecting border fences.

Professor Dr. Pramod Kumar Kushwaha emphasized the role of education in clarifying public perceptions about the border, attributing misunderstandings to deficiencies in the education system.
