Prime Minister Engages in Talks on Ncell Ownership Transition

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has called a high-level meeting to discuss the intricacies surrounding the purchase and sale of Ncell, a prominent private telecommunications service provider in Nepal.

The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Tuesday evening, focused on the ownership and trading of Ncell shares. The discussions were marked by the presence of key political figures, including Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-Unified Socialist Party Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal, Janata Samajwadi Party leader Rajendra Shrestha, and Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Chairman Mahantha Thakur, along with several ministers.

The impetus for this gathering stems from the recent divestment of Ncell shares by the Malaysian company Axiata. The shares were reportedly sold to a UK-based entity owned by non-resident Nepali, Satishlal Acharya. The Prime Minister’s Secretariat confirmed that the meeting aimed to delve into the intricacies of the recent ownership transition and its potential implications.

The transaction involving Axiata’s divestment has sparked heightened interest and concern, prompting the government to engage in a thorough examination of the matter. As Nepal navigates this pivotal moment in the telecommunications sector, the outcomes of the high-level meeting are anticipated to shape the future trajectory of Ncell’s ownership and its impact on the broader telecom landscape in the country.
