Rajendra Mahato Initiates Plans for a New Political Party Amidst Rift with LSP

Rajendra Mahato, the second-ranking leader of the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP), is actively laying the groundwork for the establishment of a new political party following months of escalating tensions with LSP Chairman Mahanth Thakur.

The dispute between Mahato and Thakur reached a critical point when Mahato boycotted the recent Central Committee meeting, citing dissatisfaction with Thakur’s leadership. Sources close to Mahato revealed that he sought advice during a recent tour of Madhesh districts, engaging with local LSP workers. Most advisors reportedly deemed Thakur’s leadership untenable, urging Mahato to forge ahead with the creation of a new political entity.

Despite legal provisions preventing Mahato from formally splitting from LSP and establishing a new party, the seasoned politician is exploring alternative avenues. The law stipulates a mandatory five-year waiting period for a party formed through a split to create another new party. To circumvent this restriction, Mahato is strategizing the formation of a new party without a formal split, thereby allowing public officeholders and LSP-affiliated MPs to join without risking their current positions.

Mahato’s vision for the new party involves including individuals not currently holding public office, thereby avoiding potential repercussions for existing LSP members. The move signifies a significant development in the political landscape, with Mahato poised to challenge the status quo and potentially reshape the dynamics within Madhesh politics.

The Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, established in 2078 BS, now faces the prospect of internal fragmentation as Mahato sets the stage for a new chapter in his political career. As the situation unfolds, political observers closely watch the evolving dynamics within LSP and the potential ripple effects on the broader political landscape in Nepal.
