Resham Chaudhary Not Eligible for Party Membership: Ranjita Shrestha

Ranjita Shrestha, the Chairperson of the Nagarik Unmukti Party, has declared that Resham Chaudhary, previously convicted in the Tikapur murder case, does not fulfill the eligibility requirements to be a member of the party. This announcement came after Chaudhary contested his disqualification, filing a writ petition at the Supreme Court seeking recognition as the party’s Chairperson.

The Election Commission had earlier denied Chaudhary’s claim to the chairpersonship, prompting his legal challenge. During the subsequent court proceedings, the Supreme Court requested responses from the involved parties.

Responding to the court’s directives, Shrestha affirmed that Chaudhary’s conviction makes him ineligible under the party’s current statutes and requested the court to dismiss his petition.

Resham Chaudhary, who was implicated in the Tikapur case, had been released from prison after receiving a presidential amnesty. The legal tussle highlights ongoing debates about the political participation of individuals with criminal convictions in Nepal.
