Speaker extends best wishes on Maghe Sankranti festival

In a heartfelt message today, Speaker Devraj Ghimire extended his best wishes to all Nepali sisters, both at home and abroad, on the auspicious occasion of Maghe Sankranti or Maghi festival. The Speaker expressed his hope that the festivities would serve as an inspiration for fostering mutual goodwill and unity among the diverse communities in Nepal.

“May this festival inspire all to protect and promote social solidarity, tolerance, and goodwill,” remarked Speaker Ghimire in his festive greetings. He emphasized the unique cultural diversity of Nepal, a nation characterized by its multi-linguistic, multi-religious, and multicultural features.

Highlighting the significance of festivals in promoting mutual unity and goodwill, the Speaker stated, “Typical festivals with distinct cultural significance have their roles in promoting mutual unity and goodwill.” Maghe Sankranti, celebrated by various castes and communities under different names and customs, is a major contributor to this spirit of unity.

Maghe Sankranti, also known as ‘Makar Sankranti,’ holds a special place in the hearts of the Nepali people. Astrologically marking the transition of the Sun from the zodiac sign Sagittarius (Dhanu Rashi) to Capricorn (Makar Rashi), the festival signifies the end of winter and the onset of longer days.

The festival, falling on the first day of the Nepali month Magh, is traditionally observed by taking holy dips in rivers and tributaries, particularly in Triveni (the confluence of three rivers). Devotees perform rituals and offer prayers in temples, while enjoying special delicacies such as laddu made from sesame seeds and molasses, ghee, yam, and khichadi, a dish made of rice and lentils.

As the nation embraces the joyous celebrations of Maghe Sankranti, Speaker Devraj Ghimire’s warm wishes resonate with the spirit of unity and cultural diversity that defines the beautiful nation of Nepal.
