Subedi elected chairperson of Nepal Teachers’ Federation

The Nepal Teachers’ Federation (NTF) has unveiled a new 75-member leadership team led by Laxmi Kishor Subedi, following its second national general convention. Subedi, previously the general secretary of the Federation, steps up as the new chairperson amid a backdrop of internal discord that delayed the announcement.

The convention, which commenced on April 22, faced setbacks as the Nepal National Teachers Association, a prominent faction within the Federation, opted out of participation. The group expressed dissatisfaction over the non-fulfillment of their request to postpone the convention, citing concerns about the unilateral declaration of district committees in violation of the Federation’s statutes.

To address the ongoing internal disagreements, 11 key positions, including that of the general secretary which are traditionally held by members from the dissenting Association, have been deliberately left vacant. Chairperson Subedi confirmed that these positions remain open as part of efforts to reach a consensus and reintegrate the opposing faction. Additionally, a negotiation team has been established to mediate the dispute and restore unity within the Federation.
