Supreme Court Denies Interim Order to Reopen TikTok

The Supreme Court has declined to grant an interim order on a writ petition challenging the government’s decision to ban the  Chinese social media platform, TikTok.

The court’s decision means that TikTok will remain inaccessible for the time being.

A show cause order has been issued by the Supreme Court, directing the government to explain the rationale behind the decision to shut down TikTok.

The government is now required to provide a written response, detailing the grounds for the ban.

A total of 10 writ petitions was registered in the Supreme Court arguing that the government’s decision to ban TikTok has violated the fundamental rights of the citizens.

The Council of Ministers, in a meeting on November 13, decided to ban the Chinese video-sharing platform in Nepal.

The ban was enforced, citing disturbances in social harmony, numerous cases against public decency, and a lack of cooperation from TikTok Company in the process of minimizing crime and prosecuting criminals, among other reasons.
