Supreme Court Hearing on Chaudhary’s Amnesty Deferred

The scheduled hearing for the writ petition challenging the government’s decision to grant amnesty to Resham Chaudhary, the founder of the Nagarik Unmukti Party, has been deferred. This decision comes as a result of an inadequate number of Justices available at the Supreme Court.

Resham Chaudhary had previously been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Supreme Court for his involvement in the tragic Tikapur incident, which took place on August 24, 2015, in Tikapur Municipality, Kailali. This incident led to the loss of eight lives, including five Nepal Police personnel, two armed forces members, and one child, along with Senior Superintendent of Police Seti Zone Chief, SSP Laxman Neupane.

Chaudhary’s sentence had been commuted based on the government’s recommendation as part of Republic Day celebrations on May 29. The final hearing for the writ petition, which was scheduled for today, has now been postponed. The petition was filed by Sharada Kadayat, the widow of police inspector Keshav Bohra, who tragically lost his life in the Tikapur incident.

On May 30, Kadayat submitted a petition to the Supreme Court, seeking to annul the President’s decision and enforce Chaudhary’s full prison term. The Supreme Court had initially upheld the verdict of the lower court, which found Chaudhary guilty in connection with the Tikapur incident. However, the detailed judgment remains pending, and the imprisonment was remitted.

The postponement of the hearing raises questions about the future of Chaudhary’s case and the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the Tikapur incident. The case continues to be a subject of significant public interest and concern.
