Sushil Pyakurel Declines Nepal’s Ambassadorship to South Korea

Sushil Pyakurel, the eminent human rights activist who was recommended as Nepal’s ambassador to South Korea at a recent cabinet meeting, has declined the prestigious diplomatic position.

Pyakurel’s decision to refuse the ambassadorship was communicated through a formal letter addressed to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, wherein he requested the withdrawal of his appointment. This development unfolded during Friday’s cabinet session, where ambassadors for eight countries were proposed, with Pyakurel selected for South Korea.

A representative of the UML quota, Pyakurel had already informed the UML leadership of his choice to decline the ambassadorship. Expressing disappointment over the handling of his appointment, Pyakurel highlighted the fact that neither the Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the Cabinet Secretariat had consulted with him prior to recommending him for the ambassadorial post.

While acknowledging his current lack of inclination towards the ambassadorial role, Pyakurel refrained from delving further into the specifics surrounding his decision when pressed for additional comments.
