Tamakoshi River Flow Restored After Brief Blockage Due to Landslide in Dolakha

The Tamakoshi River in Dolakha district, Nepal, experienced a temporary blockage today following a landslide near Deurali in Bigu Rural Municipality-1. The incident, occurring approximately 2.5 kilometers north of the dam of the Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project in Lamabagar, raised concerns in the region.

Fortunately, swift actions and effective coordination led to the river’s resumption of flow, mitigating further risks. Mem Bahadur Tamang, Chairperson of Ward-1 of Bigu Rural Municipality, reassured the public, stating, “Now that the river has started flowing, there is no further risk.” The river, which had been obstructed around 11 am, resumed its course by approximately 3 pm.

However, the landslide’s aftermath has left repercussions for nearby communities. Tamang disclosed that the landslide has severed access to two villages in north-western Dolakha, namely Lapchi and Lunnang, with the only road washed away.

The situation posed challenges for approximately 60 individuals, including foreign tourists, who found themselves stranded. In response, authorities are mobilizing resources and devising alternative routes for their evacuation.

The incident underscores the vulnerability of the region to natural hazards and highlights the importance of proactive measures in disaster management and response.
