What led to Haribol Gajurel’s decision to resign from his position as Political Advisor?

The CPN (Maoist Center) finds itself embroiled in controversy following the resignation of Haribol Gajurel, the Political Advisor to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda.’ Gajurel tendered his resignation on December 6, citing serious policy disagreements as the primary reason for his decision.

Gajurel, a seasoned politician, expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs within the government, pointing to a lack of conducive working conditions and a growing frustration among the people.

When asked about the nature of the differences leading to his resignation, Gajurel emphasized that it wasn’t a personal matter but a broader issue related to the modus operandi of the government. He criticized the functioning of Singha Durbar, stating that it did not differ significantly from the Panchayat regime, and highlighted the bureaucracy’s lack of favorability towards the people.

Gajurel clarified that his decision was not driven by a desire for a specific position, dispelling rumors that his resignation was a bargaining chip for a post in the National Assembly. He underscored the seriousness of the policy issues at hand, stating, “It’s not about any position but a serious policy issue, a matter of people’s livelihood.”

Responding to questions about the government’s performance a month and a half ago, Gajurel acknowledged that the Maoist government was acclaimed for its performance during that period. However, he expressed concern over the current state of affairs, noting that the government is now under fire for its poor performance from various quarters.

As for the approval of his resignation, Gajurel disclosed that Prime Minister Prachanda has not yet approved it. When questioned about the possibility of rejoining the government, Gajurel indicated that it would depend on the approval of his resignation and the subsequent discussions with the Prime Minister.

In response to rumors about dissatisfaction with Ganga Dahal, Gajurel asserted that his resignation was not based on personal grievances and reiterated his commitment to being responsible for the party.

The controversy surrounding Gajurel’s resignation adds a new layer of complexity to the political landscape, raising questions about the government’s internal dynamics and its ability to address the concerns voiced by one of its key political advisors. As the CPN (Maoist Center) grapples with this internal challenge, the public awaits further developments and potential implications for the government’s stability and performance.
